Why Hobbies Are Important (Plus a Journal Prompt)

My husband was out of town for five days. Which meant I was parenting alone while working and running the house. And I was spiraling.
It stated Tuesday night. I went to the hair salon and got hair dye in my eye. Which burned my eye. And put me in a poor mental state. For anything physically wrong can cause me to slip into a deep depression where I don’t come out for days.Â
Then Wednesday, the day my husband left, I got locked out of my car and a police officer had to come and open my car. Which meant my daughter was an hour late for school. And I missed an hour of work.
Then when we got home the power went out. Then I got my period. We were running out of things that I didn’t have the energy to go to the store for. And I felt out of control.Â
Then I started writing while my daughter was playing, and I started looking for photos to print and put in frames around our house, and I began to feel more like myself.Â
I stopped focusing on the things that were going wrong and started to enjoy the things I was doing. Doing things I can control like writing and printing pictures. Not focusing on the things that are out of my control.
Writing, reading, going for walks, doing tarot and printing pictures are all some of my hobbies. Even scrolling on social media can be a hobby if it’s used correctly. (If it is used as a quick break with a goal to learn something as opposed to mindlessly looking at what other people are doing and comparing myself.)Â
My hobbies saved me. And I hope they can help save you.Â
So take five minutes and really think about what you enjoy doing. What brings you joy. What your hobbies are.Â
Get something to write on and with and journal about your hobbies. Make a list. And go back to them in times of need, when you have extra time or when you need a positive energy boost.Â
